Store Front Spotlights: Tobi, Smak, and Lael Shopping

Monday, November 16th, 2009

by Quin Woodward-Pu

laelTobi

Known for their “1 to 1 shopping experience,” this strictly online boutique is an innovative addition to the online shopping world. Tobi was started by a duo of women, Cathy and Corina, who were tired of the crowds, lines, and general irritations of in-store shopping. So, they created this website, which offers all the benefits of personal shopping without any of the hassle of hordes of people scouring your sale rack. Tobi’s 1 to 1 relationship is based on personal attention, so that the customer feels like he or she is revisitng a favorite boutique. This experience is created by live chat rooms, so that salespeople can offer candid opinions and expertise for people looking for the right clothing. Tobi carries all the standard mid- to high-end designers and lines, and with a free shipping feature on every single order, shopping at Tobi might just be the best of both worlds for in-store and online shopping. With departments for both men and women, not to mention specialized categories like eco-friendly clothing, season items, and a virtual sale rack, this is definitely a great place to look if you’re short on time but still want to enjoy luxurious, stylish clothing.

Smak Parlour

This boutique may have an adorable, kitschy little store located in Philadelphia, but its online shopping store is available to people everywhere, and with its extensive selection of up-and-coming designers and established labels, it’s a great place for people from all over the world to find cute clothes. Founded by two best friends Abby Kessler and Katie Loftus, this retro-punk-glam store is based on the collection choices and editions by the two supergirly founding designers. Smak Parlour also carries a house line of designs, making its collection unique to the store and even more of a must-see shopping destination. Clothing is vintage inspired, while the original Barbie doll is also another fashion muse for the colorful and whimsical clothing. Carrying everything from zebra leggings to cocktail dresses to baby clothes to housewarming gifts and intricate jewelry, Smak Parlour is an all-around interesting and unique online super-boutique.

Lael Boutique

“Any true Fashionista knows that Hi – Fashion is risky” says the owner of this boutique, Lael Marshall. The urban chic store, which has plenty of funky, eclectic, yet super fashionable items, was borne out of the designer’s fatigue with stores like Banana Republic and other prepster hangouts lining her Ive League hometown’s shopping community. Lael offers accessories and clothing that mix hip-hop with sophistication, like sequined berets paired with Chanel-inspired blazers. Lael Boutique is unapologetic about its swanky clientele; the target consumer “has a taste for Dom P with Moet Chandon money.” The Lael woman is sexy and on the cutting edge of fashion, likely forgoing expensive rents, dinners, or nights out in order to afford high fashion. Check out its online store and fashion blog for a different and unique perspective on the world of style. Go to Lael’s online boutique for items that won’t be found at your local department store.

by Quin Woodward-Pu

knitwitKnit Wit

This cute little boutique, with a few locations around Pennsylvania, has been running for 40 years, and it doesn’t look like there’s any end in sight for Knit Wit and its fashionable boutique collections. Knit Wit offers clothing from American designers as well as some European lines, and all their clothing fits into a classic and sophisticated wardrobe. Cocktail dresses, designer denim, and cashmere sweaters are just a few of the great items you’ll find here, along with newer designers like Alice + Olivia, Trina Turk, and Alexis Bittar, as well as old staples like Michael Stars, Blumarine, and Theory. Stop in or shop online for some upscale fashions from this boutique of well-editted collections and timeless items.

Sevilla Smith

Drop into this Philadelphia boutique, opened up by a costumer and stylist, for clothing with some artistic flair. Sevilla Smith is unique in its large collection of eco friendly lines, offering designers like Ecoganic and Ecolux. This socially conscious boutique was recently named “Best New City Boutique” by Philadelphia Magazine, and its vast array of designers and clothing styles make it a great place to shop for several different looks. New party items, like supershiny zebra print leggings and comfy, worn-in looking tunic tops, both by Corey Lynn Calter, round out the urban, boho-chic vibe of Sevilla Smith, while wardrobe basics like high-end jeans and cashmere wraps are available for those looking for clothing that is a little more versatile.

Kimberly Boutique

This Rittenhouse Square store offers an eclectic and dramatic selection of clothing that’s perfect for someone looking for a theatric aesthetic. Carrying premium lines like Badgley Mischka Platinum Label, Hudson Jeans, and Yoana Baraschi, Kimberly Boutique is for young professionals with a little more disposable income looking for well-tailored couture looks. The boutique also carries Spanx to help you look your best in these designer outfits. Hard to find labels like Young Fabulous and Broke, which specializes in slouchy-chic items with formal details that fit in nicely to a working wardrobe, as well as Rachel Pally, can be found at Kimberly Boutique, and its higher end clientele can expect nothing but the best in customer service in this intimate setting.

Omoi

This unique screen tee store, which carries clothing from America and Japan, is an interesting location for its clothing as much as for its gifts and trinkets selection. Offering Tokyo souvenirs like pencil packs and Harajuku-printed notebooks, Omoi’s selection of shirts fits in with their cartoon drawings and Japanese and English phrases. Clothing and accessories are candy colored and fluorescent, while kitschy dolls with bubble gum pink hair and brightly painted personified cupcake paperweights make it a one-stop shop for adults and kids alike. Check out Omoi for some international flair and cross cultural fashion ideas.

Chicago Store Front Spotlights

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

by Quin Woodward-Pu

Who says the Midwest is boring? Check out these Windy City stores with their world-class fashions, available anywhere via online shopping.

futurgarbwomanSara Jane

This stylish Chicago boutique, which opened up in 2002, has had a measurable effect on the city’s boutique community. As one of the first stores to offer clothing and shoes of all price ranges, including formal items for even the smallest of budgets, Sara Jane is a destination for women of all ages, including students. Sara Jane also has a couture collection, so you can use the money you save on the sale items for a luxurious splurge on the season’s newest garments. The boutique carries well-known lines, like Just a Cheap Shirt, Esley, and Frock by Tracy Reese, as well as some lesser-known and newer lines, like Right and Wrong, Project Alabama, and a Sara Jane house line. Sara Jane is a one stop shop for the complete outfit, as the boutique has clothing of all kinds, as well as shoes, accessories, and eclectic jewelry, like Zina Kao handcrafted combined metal initial necklaces and organic shaped pendants. There are even printable in store coupons on the website, for Chicagoans who are lucky enough to be able to reach this trendy and affordable store. For everyone else, however, online shopping is available.

Futurgarb

This futuristic Wicker Park, Chicago boutique offers a smorgasbord of clothing for both men and women who enjoy outfits with a little edge. Offering streetwise style in accessories like rugged knit beanies and studded leather cuff watches, Futurgarb is a great destination for clothing that you probably won’t find in a big department store. Futurgarb is more than a clothing store, however, because the boutique also sells unusual items like men’s money purses, pillboxes, backpacks, and collection of unique belt buckles, as well as women’s newsboys, fedoras, messenger bags, gloves, and card holders. This store offers a great online feature, including a few items that are specially discounted for Internet sale. Fabrics like leather, chenille, and knit cotton are specialties of the store, making it a perfect stop for punk rocker chicks, while men will enjoy scarves, printed screen tees, and dark denim.

Eskell

For this boutique, owned by two women who met in their teens, clothing is all about personal style. Eskell, which opened in 2005, launched with a line made entirely by the two owners, Kelly Whitesell and Elizabeth Del Castillo. The premiere collection featured a combination of old and new fabrics, and was a huge hit in Chicago. The store has since expanded to carry vintage clothing and little-known, up-and-coming designers. The founders of the company live by the mantra that clothing offers a woman to engage in life and self-expression, and this philosophy can be seen in the wide range of sophisticated and stylish items, like Fall 2009’s line with everything from blousy tops and trousers inspired by menswear, to elegant wrap dresses and daintily printed ladylike skirts. Eskell clothing, which can be bought online on the website, can also be found in select high-end boutiques around the country, as well as a few locations in Japan.

Store Front Spotlight: NY and LA Designer Havens

Monday, October 26th, 2009

by Quin Woodward-Pu
nonoolyons

Nonoo Lyons

It’s all about the arts for this designer duo team, which names its pieces after iconic femmes like Holly Golightly, Elizabeth Bennett, and Madame Bovary. Launching their first collection for Fall/Winter 2009, this new designer presented an exquisite collection that is both strong and structured as well as intricate and feminine. Formal jackets and coats are standout items to this collection, and Nonoo Lyons, comprised of two European women, has a vast array of clothing for the business woman with a sharp wardrobe. Materials used are of the best quality, like cashmere, silk, and European tweeds, though all clothing is assembled and created in the United States. You can find Nonoo Lyons at several international locations, but in America, look for this designer’s lines in New York, where high end boutiques like Intermix and luxury department stores like Henri Bendel carry these unique pieces.

Stop Staring!

Check out this Los Angeles dress store for cocktail hour items like little black dresses and hipster vintage dresses, as well as accessories like long black gloves, netted hats, and spectator pumps. Stop Staring! stocks new items, but all dresses are inspired by retro 1940s and 1950s clothing. Muses for the designers at this store include Audrey Hepburn, Marlene Dietrich, Rita Hayworth and Joan Crawford, and these legendary actresses are channeled in Stop Staring! dresses with a modern twist. The LA hotspot is a destination for Kim Kardashian and Rihanna, with its unique style and whimsical yet sexy consignment like dresses. Stop Staring! specializes in what it calls “rockability clothing,” items that are glamorous with just a bit of an edge. The main showroom is in Paramount, but dresses from this designer are sold throughout California, and can be found online from any location.

Darling

Stop by this New York boutique for a wide range of utlra girly items like lace camisoles and delicate dresses. Known as “a small shop in a big city,” Darling specializes in dresses, and carries prom, formal, wedding, cocktail, and every other kind of dress for a special occasion. The downstairs showroom, which is called the dress salon, has plenty of glamorous dresses, while the upstairs has all the perfect underthings, coats, and a few casual dresses for everyday wear. Darling is owned by Ann French Emonts, a former Broadway costume designer, and her boutique items show her flair for dramatic pieces. There are a few private labels unique to Darling, which are all named for fashion icons like Marilyn Monroe and Jackie O. They even have a selection of sparkling jewelry to help you complete your look for a night out.

Terra Boutique: The Art of the Dress

Monday, October 12th, 2009

by Quin Woodward-Pu

Washington has long been known for its stuffy suits and endless array of business professional options. Thank goodness for Terra Boutique, located right in the heart of Dupont, which specializes in beautiful dresses for every occasion, and offers an alternative to the boring pantsuit option for working women.

Right next to Starbucks, this store carries many fabulous lines for all price ranges. With the temperatures dropping, the new sweater dresses are perfect to stay stylish and warm. But if you’re looking to just update your late summer wardrobe, Terra also sells leggings. You could also pair them with the new line of jersey dresses, available in the season’s hottest colors like gray, purple, and teal. For extra warmth, pick up a slouchy and super comfy cashmere deconstructed cardigan, which can be worn in many different ways, making it a sensible and versatile investment piece.

Eva Kurshid Silk Blouse

Eva Kurshid Silk Blouse

Terra carries many notable designers, but one label found at this boutique that distinguishes it from other DC stores is Eva Khurshid, as Terra is the only DC store to carry this conservative, yet alluring, designer . There will even be a trunk show for this unique DC collection, which will feature the two designers behind the Eva Khurshid line, in addition to a small presentation about how to stay sexy and sophisticated without showing too much, on October 23rd.

To finish off your new look after grabbing a luxurious dress, take a look at Terra’s extensive jewelry collection, which ranges from dainty jeweled necklaces to huge malachite chips strung up on heavy gold chains. There’s also a great collection of cocktail rings, from huge baubles with rhinetones to more austere filligreed items, to dress up your ensemble and give it more character.

If you’re into going green without sacrificing style, check out Terra’s designer Ecoskin, which makes dresses made of plant fibers like bamboo and are made with eco friendly practices. The eco dresses are both fashionable and socially conscious, and at a price point of under $200, these pieces are the perfect splurge for green recessionistas.

There are also plenty of larger, more established names, like Diane von Fursternburg, Alexander McQueen, Black Halo, and J. Brand, which makes a designer jeans line. This makes Terra a one-stop shop for plenty of different, yet elegant, looks, which can transition easily from work to play.

No matter what occasion you’re looking to dress up for, you’ll definitely find a complete dress, accessories, and outerwear ensemble at Terra. As the perfect store for the demanding female professional, this DC boutique is bringing style, sophistication, and social awareness to the jaded suits and slacks culture of the nation’s capital, all while helping women keep their femininity and appeal in the perfect dress.

End of Summer Frocks: The Perfect Dress Ensembles for Under $100

Monday, August 31st, 2009

by Quin Woodward-Pu

With Labor Day right around the corner, it’s time to start wearing all your favorite summer pieces before it gets too cold. Here are a few items that are worth those precious few last days of the season, and you can get them all for under $100.

80spurple_southmoon

You’re date night ready in this breezy little number that’s both a cocktail dress and flirty date LBD at the same time. The cross neckline adds interest, and is reminiscent of island vacations with its intricacies. The ruffled panels make this dress updated flapper chic, while the light chiffon material is great for the last of these fleeting summer nights. Although it’s a perfect dress for a sunset cruise, this little number could even be paired with lace tights and ankle boots for an edgier wintertime date night. For now, though, tooled leather cork-heeled shoes make the perfect accompaniment, keeping this dress from being too formal and adding summery flare.

luna_south

Nothing says summer like a gingham dress and sandals. Do it the fashionable way in this red and white checkered sundress, which seems to be inspired by a kitchen apron but stays sweet and trendy with spaghetti straps and a tight bodice. Paired with subtly metallic ruched sandals, like these by Steve Madden’s younger line, Madden Girl, this look is perfect for a picnic in the park or a walk around the block. For cooler months, like September and even October if we’re lucky, you could add a denim jacket for an all-American aesthetic.

remix_shoehive

It’s all vintage in this floral shift that features a high, 1960s inspired neckline and unexpected, more conservative longer hem. This dress, which is packed with posies and colors that refuse to be muted by the impending cooler weather,. go perfect with uniquely shaped brown leather pumps: the detail of the shoes follows the rounded petals of the flowers, while the chocolate hue to them takes the place of a trite black pump for more interest and style. The best part of this Pucci-esque dress is its longer length, which makes it a perfectly transition-able piece to wear through Autumn. Flat, earthy boots and a khaki colored jacket make it a great, colorful, cold weather appropriate ensemble.

rugby_emilygrace

When you’re enjoying the last of the summer sun, live it up with a fiery orange dress, which reveals a daring amount of leg, and some grommetted gladiator sandals for added panache. Both embody the perfect summer outfit, with an easy, no-fuss dress that can be dressed up or down, paired with funky jewelry and wooden bangles, or bare necked and minimally adorned wrists. At the same time, the sandals are comfortable and fashionable, making them the ideal shoe for a walk around town. These are both versatile items that can be worn for many more seasons, and at these prices, they are a great investment, too.

Solid Bright Colors: Dress Like Megan Fox

Monday, August 24th, 2009

by Quin Woodward-Pu

So we don’t all have a seven figure salary.  But, we do have access to simple but classy dresses that are both flattering and fashionable. While we can’t claim the title as “Angelina Jolie in training,” it’s definitely possible to wear these Megan Fox inspired outfits, which are more wearable and just a little more conservative than this Transformer starlets’ usual red carpet getups.

The Stunning Ms. Fox

The Stunning Ms. Fox

Check out Ms. Fox’s fabulous pink ombre cocktail dress. There’s far too much cleavage for the average person here, but the color and stylish detail make it a very appealing dress. Instead, try out something like this fabulous vintage trench dress, which doubles as fashionable outerwear during the winter months, which is as feminine as it is powerful. The luxe satiny fabric makes it hight end and enviable, while the pink color gives it a womanly appeal. The tied bow belt keeps the look polished. You could even wear this as a transitional piece from a trendy workplace to the opening of the newest bar hot spot après work.

meganfox_yellowdress

There’s nothing more sunny than a bright yellow dress. Year round, a shade of canary is sure to brighten even the most melancholy of dispositions. It’s no wonder Megan’s sassy dress, which features a plunging neckline and thicker and flattering waist band detailing show off an already svelte figure. Try the common person version, which adds flare with rhinestone embellishments and an interesting scalloped hemline for added sartorial intrigue. Although Megan’s designer dress has unforgiving folds of voluminous extra fabric at the hip, the straight cut and attention to the waist, usually the smallest part of a woman’s body, make this dress wearable and flattering, while the lightweight fabric is perfect for a summertime soiree.

meganfox_orangedress

Megan’s form fitting orange tube dress is both intimidating for dessert lovers and blinding for the average night out. Instead, try a less bright shade of saffron in a dress cut that’s a little less rigure hugging and more forgiving. Added sleeve thickness and a deeper neckline are more doable for the average sized woman. Paired with statement jewelry, this dress could be great for a daytime look. With killer heels and the right accessories, this dress could be taken for a night on the town. While the bright color may be a little daunting, pared down compatibly hued accoutrements can be a great way to this dress from daytime casual to evening distinctive. The purposely shorn edge of the dress’ skirt is hip, but can still be formal in the right context.

There are plenty of ways to make this red carpet regular’s clothing options more suitable for everyday wear. It’s all about keeping the colors and cuts more favorable to the everyday woman while still maintaining that glamorous panache.

Repurposing Last Year’s Styles

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

by Quin Woodward-Pu, find Quin on Mondays & Thursdays

What was in last year? Can you even remember any trends pre-rompers, ankle boots, gladiator sandals, or peg legged? As styles seem to be getting more and more bizarre, it’s a good idea to take a step back and find a way to update looks from a previous season. Obviously a great money-saving tactic, taking advantage of firmly established fads and sprucing them up a bit with some modern items is a great way to get plenty of mileage out your wardrobe in this down economy. Take a look at the 2009 take on these 2008 (and previous years’) hot items:

Basic Skinny Jeans

Basic Skinny Jeans

1. Over the pants knee high boots: These are just too sexy to go away, not to mention totally functional, as they can be worn during the day and at night. Coming in a variety of heel heights, these go-go inspired shoes can be supercomfy in flat styles or super-vixen in five inches or higher. While they shined last year as an accompaniment to dark denim, try them out this year with candy colored jeans, like National Jean Company’s Basic Skinny Jean in a fabulous Twizzler red shade. You can also pair boots with textured or patterned tights and short skirts for an urban chic look that’s both sexy and covered.

Stylish Cusp Scarf

Stylish Cusp Scarf

2. Scarves: Okay, so these keep-warm accessories have been around for a long time now, but last year they definitely exploded onto the scene in every color imaginable, and in some printed patterns. This year, instead of letting the loose ends dangle on either side, why not wear them in an ultra-glamorous way by keeping the ends tied in either a bow or other manner that keeps everything tucked? It’s the way scarves were meant to be worn, and it’s also the most heat efficient way to wear them. Try this out with a new scarf in yummy chocolate brown, like the one sold at CUSP, which is a perfect, rich hue for autumn and winter.

Plaid Tunic Top

Plaid Tunic Top

3. The tunic top: I have a love/hate relationship with these babies. For one, they can be rather unflattering, and for another, they often lead to indecent exposure when women proudly proclaim, “it’s a dress!” when clearly the tunic is very often too short to fit into this category. However, for 2009, a tunic top can be updated from its usual fixture in the wardrobe from something to be paired with leggings (also NOT pants, despite many peoples’ ambitions to make them so) to a hot item to be paired with actual jeans and a punchy belt for more definition. Tunic tops are great staples because they are often solid in color. Standout jewelry makes an excellent statement when paired with tunics, as do funky accessories that take center stage to an otherwise staid ensemble. Even Intermix’s plaid tunic top could stand some eclectic turquoise or otherwise earthy jewelry, especially paired with the right pair of jeans.

Sure, fashion houses are strutting models down the runway with bizarre “ready-to-wear” fashions that are better suited for costumes, but with these modernized takes on last year’s styles, there’s no need to go out and splurge on designer pieces.
