Terra Boutique: The Art of the Dress

Monday, October 12th, 2009

by Quin Woodward-Pu

Washington has long been known for its stuffy suits and endless array of business professional options. Thank goodness for Terra Boutique, located right in the heart of Dupont, which specializes in beautiful dresses for every occasion, and offers an alternative to the boring pantsuit option for working women.

Right next to Starbucks, this store carries many fabulous lines for all price ranges. With the temperatures dropping, the new sweater dresses are perfect to stay stylish and warm. But if you’re looking to just update your late summer wardrobe, Terra also sells leggings. You could also pair them with the new line of jersey dresses, available in the season’s hottest colors like gray, purple, and teal. For extra warmth, pick up a slouchy and super comfy cashmere deconstructed cardigan, which can be worn in many different ways, making it a sensible and versatile investment piece.

Eva Kurshid Silk Blouse

Eva Kurshid Silk Blouse

Terra carries many notable designers, but one label found at this boutique that distinguishes it from other DC stores is Eva Khurshid, as Terra is the only DC store to carry this conservative, yet alluring, designer . There will even be a trunk show for this unique DC collection, which will feature the two designers behind the Eva Khurshid line, in addition to a small presentation about how to stay sexy and sophisticated without showing too much, on October 23rd.

To finish off your new look after grabbing a luxurious dress, take a look at Terra’s extensive jewelry collection, which ranges from dainty jeweled necklaces to huge malachite chips strung up on heavy gold chains. There’s also a great collection of cocktail rings, from huge baubles with rhinetones to more austere filligreed items, to dress up your ensemble and give it more character.

If you’re into going green without sacrificing style, check out Terra’s designer Ecoskin, which makes dresses made of plant fibers like bamboo and are made with eco friendly practices. The eco dresses are both fashionable and socially conscious, and at a price point of under $200, these pieces are the perfect splurge for green recessionistas.

There are also plenty of larger, more established names, like Diane von Fursternburg, Alexander McQueen, Black Halo, and J. Brand, which makes a designer jeans line. This makes Terra a one-stop shop for plenty of different, yet elegant, looks, which can transition easily from work to play.

No matter what occasion you’re looking to dress up for, you’ll definitely find a complete dress, accessories, and outerwear ensemble at Terra. As the perfect store for the demanding female professional, this DC boutique is bringing style, sophistication, and social awareness to the jaded suits and slacks culture of the nation’s capital, all while helping women keep their femininity and appeal in the perfect dress.

D.C. Date Doctor, Date 18: The Pumpkin Patch

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

This is Date 18 of a continuing series of DC’s 50 Best Dates you don’t know about

Pumpkins!

Pumpkins!

This is one of the Date Doctor’s favorites… and he guarantees it to be one of yours too. Located a good one hour drive from the District, just outside of Fredericksburg, VA, is Belvedere Plantation. Escape the hustle and bustle of the city to the countryside with a group of friends and experience the best of fall’s harvest. The main attraction, of course, is the pumpkins. Take a tractor-drawn hayride to a GIGANTIC pumpkin patch filled with hundreds upon hundreds of bright orange pick-your-own pumpkins. They have every size, shape and personality you could ever hope for. But the adventure doesn’t end there at Belvedere Plantation… experience a pumpkin mountain slide, pig races, roaring bonfires, farm animals, a pumpkin canon (that can launch a single pumpkin over 500 yards!) and my personal favorite, a five acre cornfield maze. I have been visiting the “fall festival” for over three years now and I still have not returned from the maze victorious. You are sent out with a 7 ft flag that you can wave when you need assistance from the friendly staff. This labyrinth of corn stalks is filled with towers, slides, bridges and a map that you fill in as you go along at designated check points. This isn’t your grandma’s corn maze!

Belvedere also has a fresh farm market where you can purchase pre-picked pumpkins, all shapes and sizes, blooming mums, local honey, corn shocks and Indian corn for decorating, gourds, mini-pumpkins, jams/jellies, candy selections and fresh baked pies. There are also two outdoor tents where they make their own kettle korn (I always pick up an extra large bag of the popping hot treat before heading into the maze) and fresh, warm apple cider.

Belvedere Plantation is open every Friday – Sunday in October (and Monday, Oct. 12th for Columbus Day). Admission is $15 and covers all the attractions. Pumpkins are purchased by the pound (55 cents/pound) or by the ever popular all-you-can-carry for $26.99. Bring a can of food and get $1 off.

DC Date Dr, Date 17: Cantler’s Riverside Inn

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009

This is Date 17 of D.C. Area’s 50 Best Dates You Don’t Know About!

cantlersThe fond memories of summer fade away as the humidity subsides and the beautiful fall season arrives in September to the DC region. September also brings in the peak of the Chesapeake’s blue crab season. Nothing says the end of summer like an afternoon picking heavy Maryland blue crabs on a picnic table with a nice cold beer. Just outside of Annapolis, Cantler’s Riverside Inn is the epitome of the traditional mid-Atlantic crab house. The restaurant sits on the water of Mill Creek, where you can enjoy their patio, dock and indoor bar while enjoying some of the best and freshest local seafood the area has to offer. The dining room and outside seating is all one could hope for from a waterman’s haunt: communal tables covered in brown paper with marine memorabilia, photos of the Chesapeake Bay and Oriole’s banners spanning the more than 30 years that the Riverside Inn has been operating.

Needless to say, the crabs are what you order here. A nice side of hush puppies and fresh, in season, corn on the cob is a good addition. Don’t feel like rolling up your shirt sleeves and breaking out the mallet? They have an overwhelming amount of fantastic appetizers, great MD crab soup, delicious steamed mussels and clams, and some really good platters including fresh fish and chicken Chesapeake. Here is your Date Doctor tip: Arrive early. On summer weekends, the outdoor tables fill up quickly. There is typically a waiting list, but don’t fret, it moves very quickly. Cantler’s now has set up a makeshift bar in the parking lot, where you can purchase a Bud Light Lime (among other options) before heading down to the dock to see their tanks filled with blue crabs, soft shells, turtles and horseshoe crabs.

Jimmy Buffet has claimed that Cantler’s is one of his top 10 favorite places to have a drink waterside. If Jimmy recommends it, and the Date Doctor recommends it, could we be wrong? We think not.

End of Summer Frocks: The Perfect Dress Ensembles for Under $100

Monday, August 31st, 2009

by Quin Woodward-Pu

With Labor Day right around the corner, it’s time to start wearing all your favorite summer pieces before it gets too cold. Here are a few items that are worth those precious few last days of the season, and you can get them all for under $100.

You’re date night ready in this breezy little number that’s both a cocktail dress and flirty date LBD at the same time. The cross neckline adds interest, and is reminiscent of island vacations with its intricacies. The ruffled panels make this dress updated flapper chic, while the light chiffon material is great for the last of these fleeting summer nights. Although it’s a perfect dress for a sunset cruise, this little number could even be paired with lace tights and ankle boots for an edgier wintertime date night. For now, though, tooled leather cork-heeled shoes make the perfect accompaniment, keeping this dress from being too formal and adding summery flare.

Nothing says summer like a gingham dress and sandals. Do it the fashionable way in this red and white checkered sundress, which seems to be inspired by a kitchen apron but stays sweet and trendy with spaghetti straps and a tight bodice. Paired with subtly metallic ruched sandals, like these by Steve Madden’s younger line, Madden Girl, this look is perfect for a picnic in the park or a walk around the block. For cooler months, like September and even October if we’re lucky, you could add a denim jacket for an all-American aesthetic.

It’s all vintage in this floral shift that features a high, 1960s inspired neckline and unexpected, more conservative longer hem. This dress, which is packed with posies and colors that refuse to be muted by the impending cooler weather,. go perfect with uniquely shaped brown leather pumps: the detail of the shoes follows the rounded petals of the flowers, while the chocolate hue to them takes the place of a trite black pump for more interest and style. The best part of this Pucci-esque dress is its longer length, which makes it a perfectly transition-able piece to wear through Autumn. Flat, earthy boots and a khaki colored jacket make it a great, colorful, cold weather appropriate ensemble.

When you’re enjoying the last of the summer sun, live it up with a fiery orange dress, which reveals a daring amount of leg, and some grommetted gladiator sandals for added panache. Both embody the perfect summer outfit, with an easy, no-fuss dress that can be dressed up or down, paired with funky jewelry and wooden bangles, or bare necked and minimally adorned wrists. At the same time, the sandals are comfortable and fashionable, making them the ideal shoe for a walk around town. These are both versatile items that can be worn for many more seasons, and at these prices, they are a great investment, too.
